“Hi … I don’t really know what to do, but I can’t do this anymore. I… I need help.”

That was the heaviest sentence I’ve ever said out loud. The kind that makes the world go silent for a second.

I had finally picked up the phone to call someone – anyone – who could help get me into treatment. But the truth is, I had no idea what I was doing.

How to Get Help When You Don’t Know Where to Start: What Comes Next

I wasn’t in the right headspace to be researching programs or comparing options like I was shopping for a phone charger on Prime Day. I was barely holding it together. I was at the end of my road. And all I knew for sure was that I couldn’t keep living the way I was.

So when the person on the other end asked if I needed detox, I froze.

Detox? Inpatient? Outpatient? What did any of that even mean?

When you’re in crisis, it’s overwhelming to figure out what kind of help you need. And yet, that’s exactly when you’re supposed to be making big decisions. I learned quickly that not all treatment is the same, and that understanding the difference between inpatient and outpatient care can change the entire trajectory of your recovery.

That’s why I’m writing this. Because if you’re in that moment, where everything hurts and nothing makes sense,

I want you to know what I didn’t.

How to Get Help When You Don’t Know Where to Start: Types of Addiction Treatment

Inpatient Treatment: Stabilization & Safety

Inpatient treatment, sometimes called residential rehab, is a live-in program where clients receive 24/7 medical and therapeutic care. It’s usually the right choice for someone who:

  • Needs medical detox from substances like alcohol or benzodiazepines
  • Has a history of seizures, withdrawal complications, or co-occurring medical issues
  • Doesn’t have a safe or stable home environment
  • Requires a high level of structure to start their recovery

Medical detox is not just about comfort, it’s about survival. Alcohol and benzo withdrawal can be dangerous, even fatal. Inpatient settings provide that critical stabilization so you can safely begin healing.

Outpatient Treatment: Flexibility & Real-Life Recovery

Once someone is medically stable, or if they don’t require detox to begin with, outpatient care may be the best fit. That’s where programs like the ones we offer at Apex Recovery in Succasunna come in.

Outpatient treatment allows you to continue living at home, working, and caring for your family while attending structured therapy and support services multiple times a week. We offer three levels of care:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Intensive daytime care without overnight stay
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Multiple days per week of clinical and therapeutic support
  • Outpatient (OP): Ongoing support as you transition into full independence

This type of treatment is especially helpful for people who are rebuilding their lives and learning to stay sober in the real world. It’s where I did some of my most important recovery work.

Why the Full Continuum of Care for Treatment Matters

I used to think that getting sober meant going away for 30 days and coming back “fixed.” But UNFORTUNATELY, it really doesn’t work like that (trust me, I tried). It’s a chronic condition that needs ongoing support, not a one-time solution.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), individuals who complete a full continuum of care, starting with detox or residential treatment, followed by outpatient and aftercare, have success rates of up to 65 percent in maintaining sobriety for at least one year. Compare that to short-term treatment alone, and the difference is staggering.

Recovery is not about how fast you get through it. It’s about how deeply you engage with it.
